Those less informed about the current state of the automotive business may end up doing a double take when they find out that Buick is a top-selling premium brand in China. But it is, and China may just be one of the reasons GM may soon bounce back to being a top global player once again.
Shanghai GM, General Motors’ China arm, has debuted the Excelle XT at the Guangzhou Auto Show yesterday. The Excelle XT is a five-door “sedan/coupe” based on the Opel Astra. It will serve as Buick’s entry-level model in its Chinese market lineup.
The Excelle XT will be available with a choice of three petrol/gasoline engines. The most powerful of which is a 1.6 liter turbocharged four-banger with 180 hp (135kW) and 235 Nm of toque. A superboost function can also take that torque figure up to 266 Nm for a few moments when needed.
Next in the engine range is a 1.8 liter gasoline/petrol engine with 138 hp (103kW) and 175 Nm of torque. A naturally aspirated 1.6 liter with 116 hp (85kW) and 155 Nm of torque will also be available. All engines will come with a six-speed automatic transmission.
TheGuangzhou Auto Show runs from November 24-30. Shanghai GM has sold 548,708 vehicles in China so far this year.
