Report: Ford targeting up to 700-pound weight loss across lineup

Filed under: SUV , Truck , Ford With stricter 2012-2016 fuel economy standards quickly creeping up on automakers, research and development departments industry-wide are looking for innovative technologies to improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions. But while hybrids and electric vehicles provide the largest wow factor, most powertrains in the near term will be of the internal combustion variety, so Ford is looking to shed pounds as well. TheDetroitBureau.com reports that Ford is looking to trim between 250 and 700 pounds from each of its vehicles by 2017 or 2018. That’s an impressive total given the fact that added safety measures and more technology have contributed to the bloated scale-breakers we have today, and an aluminum hood or high strength steel can only make up some of that distance.

Even though the Ford behemoth holds a slight edge in horsepower and torque, the Chevrolet beat the Blue Oval machine handily in the steep-grade acceleration challenge. We’d think General Motors would be satisfied with the results, but apparently The General needed to go a step further.

Ford to idle first plant as a result of Japan disaster

Filed under: Truck , Plants/Manufacturing , Ford 2011 Ford F-450 Lariat – Click above for high-res image gallery Ford hasn’t said much about its supply situation in the wake of the earthquake in Japan, but now the automaker has no choice but to spill the beans. The Detroit News reports that Ford will shut down its Louisville, Kentucky plant next week due to a parts shortage. The facility produces the Ford Expedition , Ford Super Duty trucks, and the Lincoln Navigator . Ford sales analyst George Pipas did not identify the part that was in short supply, though he did add that high gas prices have helped slow sales of these vehicles anyway

Why is this news, and what the heck is a steering column control module? In the old days (the 1990s), a bunch of individual pieces were fastened to the steering column.

The title bout of that competition featured Detroit’s best diesel-powered three-quarter and one-ton pickups, with the Chevy Silverado HD coming out on top. But while victory was sweet for the Bowtie brand, some Blue Oval fans bemoaned the fact that the Super Duty trucks weren’t of the “Job Two” variety.
