It wasn’t as if I’d earned some black mark from the German sportscar maker – I’ve spent the better part my a career pontificating on the virtues of the plucky 914 and more than a few synapses thinking about scoring seat time in cars like the Boxster Spyder , Cayman R and, if I were feeling really indulgent, the 911 GT2 RS . Hell, after learning of the automaker’s prowess in the Transsyberia Rally, I even became a stout defender of the Cayenne SUV’s right to exist.

In fact, the Cayenne is already the best-selling Porsche, and that likely won’t change any time soon. Automotive News reports that Porsche plans to increase Cayenne production by 10 percent this year and 20 percent in 2012 to help satiate demand. The recently revamped utility vehicle is in demand around the world, and in China buyers have to wait 12 months for the chance to own a Cayenne.

Porsche is apparently considering two ways to remedy that: one is to stagger its new unveilings so that each year births a new model, and the other is to create a supercar to occupy the space between the $245,000 911 GT2 RS and the forthcoming $845,000 918 Spyder . There are quite a few other contestants in that space, from relative newcomers like McLaren and BMW (well, soon), to rivals like Ferrari and cousins like Lamborghini (even sooner).
