After testing eight mid-size to large sedans, the IIHS has called out the 2011-12 Volkswagen CC and 2011 Saab 9-5 for its highest award. Both vehicles earned “good” ratings for front, side, rear and rollover protection during testing. It should be noted, however, that only the front-wheel-drive VW CC gets the Top Safety nod, as the all-wheel-drive version only received an “acceptable” rating in rollover testing.

2011 Saab 9-5 Aero XWD Sedan

2011 Saab 9-5 Aero XWD Sedan Good, but not quite right. Poor, poor Saab. The entire time I was behind the wheel of the 9-5, I thought I was in a reskinned Buick.

Video: Saab plays up its "Born From Jets" heritage in new TV spot

Filed under: Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Saab Saab celebrates its heritage – Click above to watch the video after the jump Just over a year ago, Saab suffered through a near-death experience . Apparently, it took until now for the flashbacks to begin. Beyond the jump is a 30-second commercial for the new 9-5 that spends more time waxing poetic about Saab’s 60-year history than it spends showing off its latest sports sedan. We’re okay with that, though, because we rather enjoy viewing moving pictures of such classics as the 92001 prototype and the 96 (shown above).

Rendered Speculation: Saab 9-5 looks rakish as a coupe

Filed under: Coupe , Saab The all-new Saab 9-5 is one of the best looking models to come out of Trollhattan in recent memory, but for now it’s only available as a four-door sedan, with a wagon version coming in the very near future. While it’s been nearly a decade since Saab discontinued its last coupe based on the 9-3 (okay, so it was a liftback) the 9-5 and its predecessor, the 9000, have never been offered in two-door flavor. However, that hasn’t stopped a member of Saabs United , Z!, from breaking out Photoshop and rendering up a 9-5 coupe. The ‘shopped image features some of trademark Saab elements, particularly the downward sloping roofline and bulbous back end.
