Ford was quick to point out at its press conference that Camry and Accord sales were down 31 percent and 28 percent, respectively, since 2007, with increased competition being a major culprit for the decline. The Fusion has taken a different route, with 2011 serving as the sedan’s best year of sales ever. Ford is hoping to add a whole lot more pressure to the Japanese stalwarts with the addition of the 2013 Fusion .

Detroit: 2013 Ford Fusion eager to take on Camry, Accord
Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrid , Sedan , Ford When the original Ford Fusion Hybrid debuted in 2009 as a 2010 model, it was rated at 41 miles per gallon in the city, making it the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedan in North America. Ford aims to re-capture that same magic with the 2013 Fusion Hybrid, which makes its debut today at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Final EPA numbers have not been released just yet, but Ford’s preliminary data suggests that the 2013 Fusion Hybrid will be capable of achieving 47 mpg in the city, along with an immensely respectable 44 mpg highway. That’s better than the mid-size hybrid offerings from Hyundai , Kia and Toyota

But don’t think that the 2013 Fusion is all beauty and no brains. Ford is preparing the new Fusion, as well as its Hybrid and Energi fuel-mizing siblings, to be the most fuel-efficient, best-driving, tech-packed range of sedans in the mid-size segment. Thanks to vehicles like the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima , we’ve seen that mid-size sedans don’t necessarily have to be conservatively styled three-box appliances, and this new Fusion is certainly a looker.
