Report: NY city council bans alternate side parking shame stickers

Filed under: Government/Legal New York City drivers rarely get much to be happy about, but a recent decision by the New York City Council to eliminate the practice of stickering parking violators is bound to be greeted with unanimous joy. Outside of the mayor’s office, that is. Despite The New York Times reporting a 47-0 vote in favor of prohibiting the city’s sanitation department from applying the stickers to cars parked in the way of its cleaning crews, the Bloomberg administration was steadfast in its support of the “shame” stickers.

Filed under: Government/Legal , Safety , Technology , Toyota “We couldn’t find anything, but we’re still blaming the car.” That’s the gist of the statement from a National Academy of Sciences panel headed by New Jersey Institute of Technology physics professor Louis Lanzerotti. The NAS supports U.S. regulators shutting down investigation of Toyota unintended acceleration incidents without finding electronic faults that would cause the behavior. However, at the same time, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is planning to call for further oversight and more study to attempt to rule out electronic causes.

Report: DRB-Hicom to buy Proton

Filed under: Government/Legal , Lotus A deal has been reached to sell the Malaysian government’s controlling, 43-percent stake in Proton Holdings Bhd to Malaysian conglomerate DRB-Hicom for $410 million. Rumors surrounding the deal have been in the news for a few months, with Proton’s deteriorating profits leading to speculation about if the government would get out and who be the savior. Of course, the other big question was: what happens to Lotus in the event of a sale. Analysts had uniformly suggested that Proton sell Lotus , citing Proton’s sales difficulties and lack of synergies as more than enough reason

Report: Fiat, Chrysler and who? Marchionne mulling third partner

Filed under: Chrysler , Earnings/Financials , Fiat Fiat /Chrysler sold about 4.2 million cars in 2010, and company CEO Sergio Marchionne expects to improve that by more than 33% come 2014, predicting sales of 5.7 units that year (analysts, on the other hand, predict average Fiat/ Chrysler sales of 4.9 million in 2014). Operating profit for 2011 has been pegged at around $600 million, a rewarding bump from the $200 to $500 million predicted earlier in the year and dwarfed by the predicted $3 billion operating profit for 2012. For Marchionne, though, those numbers need help from the outside: he says that an automaker needs to sell ten million units per year globally in order to reach “a new level of efficiency” and get development costs where he wants them.

Report: Audi to unveil Vail CUV concept in Detroit

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Crossover , Audi Audi CEO Rupert Stadler slipped up while talking to Bloomberg , telling the financial pub that in addition to the 2013 A4 and A4 AllRoad , a small crossover concept will debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week. Stadler didn’t give up anything in the way of details, but the concept will be dubbed the “Vail” and could be a way to gauge reception of a smaller Audi CUV in the States. If we had to guess, the Vail will feature an Allroad-like treatment on the Euro-only Q3 , likely involving a higher ride height, plastic body treatments and a more go-anywhere attitude. We’ll know for sure in a few days, but we hope that’s not all Audi has planned.
