Report: Volvo expanding S60 lineup with T5 all-wheel drive model

Filed under: Sedan , Volvo , Luxury Volvo is plugging a gap in its S60 model line by adding a T5 AWD model, according to a report from Car and Driver . As it stands, if you want all-wheel drive with your S60 you need $39,325 for the T6 just to get in the game, and only then you can you start throwing options at it. The all-wheel-drive competition is easier on the wallet: an Audi A4 Quattro begins at $34,175 and the BMW 328i xDrive starts at $37,475. Pricing hasn’t been released, but the expectation is that the S60 T5 AWD will sticker somewhere between the $32,175 front-wheel-drive model and the T6.

Report: Car and Driver Lightning Lap is back, throws two trucks into the mix [w/video]

Filed under: Videos , Comparisons Car and Driver is back with its annual Lightning Lap roundup for a sixth year, with 20 of the world’s best vehicles taking to Virginia International Raceway to lay down the quickest time around VIR’s 4.1-mile Grand West Course. Included in this year’s running is a suitably diverse spread of sports cars and sedans, ranging from the lowly Volkswagen Jetta GLI to the formidable Porsche Panamera Turbo S – a difference of 350 horsepower and over $168,000. And, just to add a bit more spice to the festivities, C/D introduced a new class (LLT) to include two trucks in the running: the BMW X5 M and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 . But what C/D gives, it taketh away.

Report: Mini working up new John Cooper Works GP edition

Filed under: Performance , Mini The Mini faithful fondly remember the John Cooper Works GP (pictured above). Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006, the GP edition was the fastest version of the first-gen Mini hatchback. It packed 218 horsepower, 180 pound-feet of torque, a beefier suspension and – thanks to the removal of the back seats and air-conditioning – 88 fewer pounds to motivate.

Report: Abarth working up new sports car separate from Alfa 4C

Filed under: Coupe , Performance , Europe , Fiat How many sports cars can one automotive group offer? Just ask the people at Volkswagen , whose various divisions – Lamborghini , Bugatti , Porsche , Audi – churn them out like you and I would write Christmas cards. (Or Hannukah cards, anyway.) And the Fiat group is right behind their German counterparts, with Ferrari and Maserati keeping the upper crust of the market satisfied, and now Alfa Romeo and Abarth filling a more accessible – but potentially no less exciting – niche. Recently we brought you a progress update on the Alfa Romeo 4C , a concept mid-engine sports car that’s now apparently been green-lit for production

And while some major automotive awards are only shelled out to vehicles that are all-new or significantly updated for a certain model year, C/D ‘s approach is to look at the full scope of cars currently on sale. After all, there are some cars that are simply perennial favorites, even if they haven’t changed year over year.

Report: More details on three-row Volkswagen Tiguan for U.S.

Filed under: SUV , Plants/Manufacturing , Volkswagen When Volkswagen opened its new Chattanooga factory, there were lots of questions about what else it was going to build there, since Passat volume wouldn’t come close to soaking up the facility’s 150,000-unit capacity. A three-row crossover was often mentioned as another model, with Automobile reporting that a possible 180,000-unit expansion could lead to Porsche , Audi and VW CUVs being built there. Now Car and Driver reports that a three-row Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer fighter will be built, and it will “almost definitely” be assembled in Tennessee or Mexico. It might use the Passat’s platform, the rumored engine is VW’s 3.6-liter V6, and its MSRP is expected to strongly challenge those of its competitors (in the manner of the Jetta and Passat’s newly competitive price strategies)
