DeltaWing Race Car Concept Looks like a plane and ought to go like a bat out of hell. Ben Bowlby, the evil genius behind the radical DeltaWing race car, ought to be decked out in combat fatigues, with an AK-47 slung over his shoulder. Or maybe dressed in a stiff Russian suit and one of those funky hats Lenin used to wear.

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , GM , Canada The Detroit Free Press is reporting that General Motors has added a total of 6,900 jobs since the automaker emerged from bankruptcy in 2009. The news came out of a radio interview with Steve Girsky, GM vice president. Girsky said that a portion of that figure is made up of workers who were originally laid off as part of the restructuring process and then later recalled as manufacturing picked back up.

An all-new 9-3 is going to play a big part in the revival of the Swedish brand, and Saab is reportedly hard at work on a new platform for its mainstream model. The new platform, reportedly dubbed the “Phoenix Architecture” will likely also underpin the next generation 9-5, although it may adopt some pieces from the current model such as the Hi-Per strut front suspension. Prior the GM bankruptcy, it had been decided that the next 9-3 would move from the mid-size Epsilon platform to the compact Delta platform.

Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing , GM The Detroit auto industry’s annual summer shutdown is a tradition that goes back many decades, but this year, General Motors is taking a pass. It comes from a time when the new model year started in September for every car and they all debuted simultaneously, usually in dealer showrooms. The shutdown was the two week period in the summer during which all the plants installed updated tooling for the new models. In more recent times, the practice has persisted as a time to do maintenance and other work that might interfere with production – even if it hasn’t coincided with the launch of a new model

Now that Saab is owned by Spyker Cars , CEO Victor Muller is reportedly looking for a new platform partner in Munich. According to Swedish daily Dagens Industri , Saab is negotiating with BMW about getting access to the Mini architecture for a new 9-2 model to slot in underneath the 9-3 .

Decked out in matte black paint, the special Delta doesn’t lack for chrome, but the 18″ wheels can be had in optional black paint as well, while inside black leather and Alcantara coat the cabin. Mated to either a 200-horsepower, 1.8-liter direct-injection turbo four or a 190hp 1.8-liter turbo diesel, the Hard Black edition comes packed with adaptive suspension, dual-zone climate control and the Blue&Me connectivity system developed with Microsoft. Having been announced in Geneva, the Delta Hard Black is now going on sale in Europe for 31,300 euros (~$40k), leaving us to wonder what a Chrysler might look like with the anti-shine treatment
