Opinion: Can rivalry between Caddy and Lincoln heat up again?

Filed under: Cadillac , Lincoln Cadillac is getting ready to launch the much anticipated rear-drive ATS and new flagship XTS this year. The Lincoln MKZ concept shown at this month’s Detroit Auto Show was very well received, and will be followed by six more new and refreshed vehicles by 2014. Earlier this year, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson told reporters he thought “holy water” should be sprinkled on the Lincoln brand.

Opinion: An early look at 2012 shows a radically new auto industry

Filed under: Car Buying , Etc. Detroit Gains Momentum As Japan Regains Its Footing The automotive world as we know it underwent plenty of shaking last year and it was the result of more than just the tragic earthquake and tsunami that rattled Japan – costing makers like Toyota and Honda perhaps a million units in lost production. While it’s certainly too early to even guess at what the big stories for 2012 will be, we can suggest, with a high level of confidence, that what had long been the industry’s established order won’t be the same going forward. The playing field has clearly shifted.

Report: Dodge Dart to use transmission from Hyundai

Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Plants/Manufacturing , Chrysler , Dodge , Hyundai Hyundai CEO John Krafcik has confirmed that the Korean automaker will supply Chrysler with transmissions for its new Dodge Dart , according to Car and Driver . While the two automakers may seem like odd dance partners, the tie-up makes plenty of sense. Both companies use engines born out of the now-defunct Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance with Mitsubishi . As a result, 2.0- and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines found in the Dart share more than a few strands of DNA with the same displacement engines found under the hood of vehicles like the Hyundai Sonata

Poll: Is this Fiat Abarth ad good enough for the Super Bowl?

Filed under: Performance , Marketing/Advertising , Hatchback , Fiat Fiat USA put a video showcasing the 500 Abarth on the Internet last November that tested the bounds of what is doable on network TV. That’s one of the big reasons it hasn’t been put on TV yet. You’ll see what we mean when you view the ad, titled “Seduction,” after the jump . It was the foam that made it iffy for the networks.

Is Chevrolet Serious About Its $20,000, Rear-Wheel-Drive Sports Car?

Is Chevrolet Serious About Its $20,000, Rear-Wheel-Drive Sports Car? Two possible directions for Chevy’s affordable halo car. Chevrolet’s stand at the Detroit auto show provided an intriguing if confusing look into the bow-tie brand’s sport compact strategy, from the mild — a slightly modified version of the Sonic due out later this year — to the wild — a Lamborghini Gallardo knock-off called the Tru 140S, which would ride on the same platform as the Cruze. Report: VW Bluesport Roadster might finally be dead before it lived

Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertible , Performance , Volkswagen A Black Knight stalks the ramparts of corporate castles, he carries a shield decorated with a wreath of beans, he swings a double-edged spreadsheet and he rides a terrifying black mare called The Bottom Line. His name is The Business Case and if a new report from Autocar is accurate, he’s done his foul work again, this time dealing another blow to the already-long-delayed Volkswagen Bluesport Roadster . Even though the engineering work for the two-seater convertible is reportedly finished, it appears no one can come up with a way to support the necessary sales projections of 50,000 units annually. That is in part because Jonathan Browning , head of VW USA, apparently doesn’t see the point of expanding VW’s product portfolio with another model (a truly unexpected sentiment coming from Volkswagen as far as we’re concerned).
