Mitsubishi i tops 2012 EPA Fuel Economy Guide

Filed under: Government/Legal , Mitsubishi , Electric What’s the most fuel-efficient vehicle sold in the United States? Well, for 2012 it’s the Mitsubishi i , at least according to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. The federal agencies have issued the latest edition of their Fuel Economy Guide , and Mitsubishi’s subcompact electric leads all vehicles with a combined rating of 112 miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent. The Nissan Leaf is second at 99 MPGe, the Ford Transit Connect Electric is third at 62, and the Chevrolet Volt ranks fourth at 60 MPGe.

Obviously, the major news surrounding Nissan’s commercial business was the recent announcement that its NV200 van has been selected to be the next-generation New York City taxi – big shoes to fill now that the Ford Crown Victoria has finally ceased production . To build on the momentum of the NV200 taxi here in the States, Castelli tells us that Nissan plans to offer a retail version to fill out its commercial vehicle line.

Official: Step Right Up: NHTSA announces list of 2012 models to be tested

Filed under: Government/Legal , Safety The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a list of 74 vehicles for the 2012 model year that it plans on crash testing. The vehicles include 42 passengers cars, 22 SUVs, eight trucks and two vans. NHTSA claims the list represents about 81 percent of the 2012 model year vehicles that will be on sold in the U.S., and further claims it will be performing rollover tests on 92 percent of the 2012 fleet. You may remember that NHTSA released the first round of results from its new, tougher crash tests in October 2010, and that first batch of vehicles didn’t fare too well

Official: Ford Transit Connect CNG taxis swing into action across U.S.

Filed under: Minivan/Van , Ford , Specialty The next time you hail a cab in Southern California, you could be jumping into a vehicle fueled by clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG). That’s because California Yellow Cab of Orange County has become the state’s first taxi company to put CNG-fueled Ford Transit Connect vans into service. California Yellow Cab says 10 (and soon more than 120) natural gas Connects are on the roads and ready to pick up passengers in the greater Los Angeles area.
