2012 Ford Focus sales being hurt by low supply

Filed under: Car Buying , Budget , Hatchback , Ford Even though Ford ‘s light vehicle sales were up seven percent in August of this year versus last, the company is running low on a very popular product: there simply aren’t enough of the 2012 Focus to go around. The company’s sales analyst, George Pipas, said it’s because there isn’t enough inventory, with 5,500 Focuses in stock at the end of July. It’s a good problem to have if that’s the real cause, but it’s still a problem. Focus sales declined more than 12 percent last month, year-on-year, and it was outsold by the Cruze by more than 7,000 units

Report: UAW workers want end to two-tier wage structure

Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing , Chrysler , Ford , GM Back in 2007-08, U.S. automakers and the United Auto Workers union signed landmark labor contracts that included many concessions on behalf of workers to keep the companies they work for competitive. Among them was an agreement to a two-tier wage structure that allowed automakers to start hiring replacements for retirees at a lower starting wage of $14-16/hour.

After all, it would be downright cruel for Ford to not offer the hottest variant of its new global Focus here in the States, especially when we’ve been denied all of the Euro-spec hot hatch fun for so long. To recap, the Focus ST uses FoMoCo’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-four, good for 247 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. There’s a six-speed manual gearbox to send that power to the ground, and though the car is fitted with front-wheel drive, the automaker’s torque-vectoring power control system is on hand to keep things from getting too squirrely.

Filed under: Sedan , Wagon , Hatchback , Ford 2012 Ford Focus – Click above for high-res image gallery The 2012 Ford Focus is set to hit dealers early next year, and in addition to a cadre of standard and optional features, Ford is equipping every new Focus with its new breed of “torque vectoring control.” For the uninitiated, torque vectoring systems actively split power between the two driven wheels to maximize traction and increase performance. Some higher-end systems manipulate the output to each wheel through a set of electronically controlled gears, while others apply a subtle amount of braking to the inside wheel, causing more power to be sent to the outside wheel, thus helping rotate the vehicle through a turn. Ford is using the latter on the 2012 Focus, the first implementation of its kind on a Blue Oval model in North America. Thanks to the continued implementation of standard traction control systems, these torque vectoring setups are becoming more common and have finally reached the compact segment
