Video: Chevy recalls a century of motorsports excellence

Filed under: Motorsports , Classics , Chevrolet General Motors is celebrating the Chevrolet Centennial this year – and treating us to some nice historical footage, like this three-minute video celebrating the Bowtie brand’s motorsports heritage. While Chevy’s racing involvement in recent years has been mostly focused on NASCAR and its Corvette Le Mans program , the marque enjoys a wealth of history in almost every racing series. Among the treats in this promotional piece are a few seconds of Bruce Larson’s USA-1 Camaro Funny Car and Jim Hall’s famous Chaparral 2 sports car, vintage NASCAR action from the era in which the term “stock car” still meant something, and there’s a mention of Juan Manuel Fangio’s stint as a Chevy driver in 1940. Of course, patron saint of Chevy Racing, Dale Earnhardt makes an appearance, as well.

Ford ended up winning the race and the victory garnered attention from investors that would help launch the Ford Motor Company just a couple of years later. Since that first race, Ford has achieved a multitude of successes in a variety of motorsports including wins at the Daytona 500 , Indy 500 , 24 Hours of Le Mans , Baja 1000 and more. As part of their celebration of 110 years of racing, Ford will be bringing together some of their more historic race cars to display at the upcoming SEMA show in Las Vegas next month.

Most modern engines last more than 100,000 miles before requiring a rebuild. The service life of the 7000-hp, 496-cubic-inch Hemi V-8 that powers Ron Capps’s Napa Dodge Charger Funny Car is 1320 feet, or exactly 4.218 seconds on the first qualifying run for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals.

With dramatic views of the ocean, the rolling greenery of the links and the surrounding mansions, the venue feels like it was built solely to play host to Southern California’s premiere concours. Second only to Pebble Beach in prominence among the California concours, Dana Point has really come of its own.

Funny Car Commercial of the Day: A good reason for an automatic

Filed under: Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Mazda , Humor Mazda offers a good reason to choose an automatic – Click above to watch the video after the break Generally speaking, all of us at Autoblog prefer to drive a manual. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. For instance, driving a supremely sedate luxury car with anything other than a sit-back-and-relax automatic gearbox doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Also, when stuck in gridlock traffic, who wants to deal with a clutch pedal?
