Study: Hybrid drivers are safer from injury in a crash

Filed under: Hybrid , Safety Hybrid models have the advantage of fuel economy over their gas-only siblings, but it appears that batteries and electric motors make them safer as well. The Highway Loss Data Institute studied 25 2003 to 2011 vehicles that featured both conventional and hybrid powertrains (example: Honda Civic and Honda Civic Hybrid). The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight were not included in the study since neither vehicle has a conventionally-powered counterpart.

IIHS HLDI releases insurance losses best and worst vehicles list

Filed under: Safety , Earnings/Financials The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute have released their findings on insurance losses on vehicles built between 2007 and 2009. The data covers until May of this year, and splits the losses into a total of six categories: collision, property damage, comprehensive, personal injury, medical payments and bodily injury. With each category, vehicles are then separated according to their size.

IIHS: New texting laws aren’t reducing accidents

Filed under: Etc. , Safety , Technology , By the Numbers The Insurance Institute for Highway Safet y has just released new findings related to texting-while-driving laws and their effectiveness – the results of which are quite surprising. The Highway Loss Data Institute, an affiliate of the IIHS, compiled claim data for four states; California, Louisiana, Minnesota and Washington. Each state has enacted a ban on texting while driving, and this study examines data for the months before and after the laws went into effect

IIHS releases latest round of safety scores for Infiniti M, Lexus HS and Toyota 4Runner

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a bevy of scores for the Infiniti M , Lexus HS 250h and Toyota 4Runner and it was nothing but “Good” all around. The Infiniti and Toyota were tested for frontal offset and side impacts, with their “Good” score maintaining the scores of their predecessors. The Lexus scored a first-time Good” in the frontal offset test.

Study: Laws banning hand-held phones do not reduce crashes

Filed under: Safety , Technology This one doesn’t surprise us one bit and we’ll explain why in a moment. Until then, clock this: a Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) study determined that laws banning the use of hand-held phones have no effect on the crash rate. None, as in zero effect.
