It’s a marketing motto nearly as old as racing itself, but while today’s NASCAR stock cars may have about as much in common with the cars they represent as a Halloween superhero costume from Walmart will actually give your kid superpowers, NASCAR remains the biggest spectator sport in America. So you can imagine that participating automakers would think themselves foolish to pass up the opportunity to make the connection in fans’ eyes to cars they can actually buy at their local dealership.

Its attitude, style, and rear-wheel drive distance it from an otherwise bland segment defined by the unexceptional Ford Taurus, Chevy Impala, and Toyota Avalon. As much as we respect the Charger’s swagger, though, we could never get past its less compelling traits — tired six-cylinder engines, sluggish transmissions, and a dour interior.

Not surprising, really, as there isn’t any single established explanation, at least not a good one, as to how today’s piston-powered engines became so intertwined with the output of a horse. Think, for a moment: Can you really quantify how much power 200 horses produce? Regardless, and though not all engines have been measured with the same methods of certification, enthusiasts of the four-wheeled kind have well over a century of automobiles and their attendant horsepower ratings with which to occupy themselves.

Official: GM commits another $68M to Oshawa to build Impala

Filed under: Sedan , Plants/Manufacturing , Chevrolet , Canada General Motors has announced that it will invest an additional $68 million into the company’s Oshawa assembly plant to produce the next-generation Chevrolet Impala . Those funds are on top of over $100 million headed toward the facility to help launch production of the Cadillac XTS in the plant. The Impala marks the fifth new model to be manufactured at Oshawa since 2009, and GM says the new investment will secure approximately 350 jobs.
