Official: Nissan taking orders for new GT3-spec Nismo GT-R

Filed under: Coupe , Nissan , Racing What would a Nissan GT-R be without the racing pedigree that’s helped make it what it is today? The truth is that we don’t even want to know. But we don’t have to, because the car known as Godzilla is as devastating on the race track as it is on the street. Very different racing versions have been made to challenge the FIA GT1 World Championship and for Japan’s own Super GT series, the latter powered by a naturally aspirated V8 to satisfy regulations instead of the twin-turbo V6 in the production model.

Review: 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ

Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Hatchback , Chevrolet , GM , New Car Reviews An Aveo By Any Other Name Is, Indeed, Sweet Whether General Motors likes it or not, the Sonic story starts in 2004, when GM decided to import a cheap, crummy little econobox from Korea. A product of its newest subsidiary, Daewoo , the Chevrolet Aveo had few charms. But it was available as a five-door hatchback, one of the few on the market at the time, and its starting sticker price was under $10,000. It was enough of a pitch that the car sold – and stuck around.

Official: Chevy Volt will receive safety enhancements, but don’t call it a recall

Filed under: Hybrid , Safety , Hatchback , Chevrolet , Electric The Chevrolet Volt is about to get safer. That’s the big message from GM today as the company announced structural and cooling system “safety enhancements” that are intended to better distribute the car’s energy load from a crash and, thus, better protect the battery from potential fires. Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, said that GM is treating this as a voluntary customer satisfaction issue, and therefor it is not a recall.

Official: 2012 Porsche 911 Cabrio heralds U.S. product blitz with Detroit debut

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertible , Performance , Porsche Half a decade ago, Porsche thought so little of the Detroit Auto Show that it canceled its participation altogether. But the German automaker came back last year with the 918 RSR concept, and will use the show to unveil its new 911 Carrera Cabriolet to the public for the first time. Initially revealed in cyberspace this past November, the new 911 Cabrio makes use of a new folding soft top that employs all manner of advanced materials like magnesium-infused canvas and high-strength steel to keep weight to a minimum, while its design is said to more closely mimic the profile and design of the fixed-roof coupe. In selecting the Detroit show as its launchpad for the new open-air Elfen, Porsche is recognizing the importance of the annual expo and the central place it holds for one of the largest new car markets in the world.

Report: Abarth working up new sports car separate from Alfa 4C

Filed under: Coupe , Performance , Europe , Fiat How many sports cars can one automotive group offer? Just ask the people at Volkswagen , whose various divisions – Lamborghini , Bugatti , Porsche , Audi – churn them out like you and I would write Christmas cards. (Or Hannukah cards, anyway.) And the Fiat group is right behind their German counterparts, with Ferrari and Maserati keeping the upper crust of the market satisfied, and now Alfa Romeo and Abarth filling a more accessible – but potentially no less exciting – niche. Recently we brought you a progress update on the Alfa Romeo 4C , a concept mid-engine sports car that’s now apparently been green-lit for production
