Confirmed: 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI to debut at Chicago Auto Show

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Coupe , Volkswagen , Diesel Volkswagen has confirmed to Autoblog that the oil-burning 2013 Beetle TDI will make its public debut at the Chicago Auto Show next month. No specific details have been released at this time, but you can bet that the automaker’s slick 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four will be underhood. In the Golf , Jetta and Passat , the mill kicks out 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, and both six-speed manual and DSG transmissions will likely be available. This engine is already good for as high as 43 miles per gallon highway in the Passat (and we’ve routinely hit as high as 50 mpg in our long-term Jetta TDI ), so we expect exceptional fuel economy out of the diesel Bug, as well.

Long Term: 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: December 2011

Filed under: Sedan , Volkswagen , Diesel , Long-Term Garage After spending the first half of December up in the San Fernando Vallery with Drew Phillips, our long-term Jetta TDI made its way back into my care for a holiday road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Old Blue saw some great American icons on the trip, such as Alcatraz, Muir Woods, Sonoma Valley and the Golden Gate Bridge. Come to think of it, the Jetta and I have seen a lot of the country’s splendor together. After all, my last run with the Volkswagen involved driving it 2,000 miles from Detroit to LA .

Long Term: 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: November 2011

Filed under: Sedan , Volkswagen , Diesel , Long-Term Garage It’s been a little over six months since the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI joined our long-term garage , and since then, we’ve put more than 17,000 miles on this Tempest Blue sedan. After spending much of the summer in Detroit, the Jetta TDI was road-tripped out to Los Angeles where the Autoblog staff in Southern California have been tending to the car. Even after half a year, we are still amazed at how easy it is to get excellent fuel mileage in the Jetta TDI. Official EPA ratings for the car are 30 city and 42 highway, but rarely do we fall below that average.

Filed under: Crossover , Hatchback , Mini , Long-Term Garage After spending September in the San Francisco bay area with Senior Editor Damon Lavrinc, our long-term 2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman All4 moved to southern California during the month of October to serve our esteemed photographer, Drew Phillips. In early November, I handed Drew the keys to our long-term 2011 Jetta TDI and stole the Countryman from his driveway. He hasn’t seen it since. I like the standard Cooper S hardtop.

Los Angeles: 2012 Green Car of the Year is the Honda Civic Natural Gas

Filed under: LA Auto Show , Sedan , Honda The 2012 Green Car of the Year award was snagged from the electric and diesel jaws of its competitors by the Honda Civic Natural Gas. In a year full of standard gasoline powertrain alternatives, the Civic beat out the Ford Focus Electric, Mitsubishi i , Toyota Prius V and the Volkswagen Passat TDI. Green Car Journal hands out the award and its rules state that the GCOTY needs to have a “quantifiable environmental achievement,” market significance and “newness.” Any car that has these clearly defined features and is available for sale by January 1, 2012 can be a nominee, and the list of finalists is whittled down by GCJ editors and selected industry and environmental experts. Over the last four years, the GCOTY was won by a hybrid (the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid in 2008), diesels (the Volkswagen Jetta TDI in 2009 and the Audi A3 TDI in 2010) and a plug-in hybrid (the Chevrolet Volt in 2011).
