Official: Chevy Volt will receive safety enhancements, but don’t call it a recall

That’s the big message from GM today as the company announced structural and cooling system “safety enhancements” that are intended to better distribute the car’s energy load from a crash and, thus, better protect the battery from potential fires. Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, said that GM is treating this as a voluntary customer satisfaction issue, and therefor it is not a recall.

According to two people “familiar with the matter” who spoke to Bloomberg , the number of Volts that GM wants to build in 2012 is now, wait for it… 120,000 units.

Ford teases Focus electric ahead of CES

Filed under: Hatchback , Ford , Electric It’s been nearly a full year since Ford made it clear that the automaker is planning to roll out an all-electric version of its Focus, and now we have our first glimpse at what to expect from the car. The Blue Oval has dusted off its first teaser of the New Year with a shot of the charging port on the EV Focus . Interestingly enough, Ford has decided to skip the Detroit Auto Show as a venue for the vehicle’s unveil, opting instead for the electrified Focus to take a bow at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which runs from January 6 to 9.

Report: GM studying how to double or triple Chevy Volt production

If you’re General Motos and the item in question is the Chevrolet Volt , then you look for ways to seriously increase the number of Volts you can build (and, of course, sell). That’s exactly what CEO Dan Akerson says his company is trying to do, looking to double or triple production rates of this very important car.

Hyundai BlueOn electric vehicle unveiled in South Korea

The tiny BlueOn is based on the Hyundai i10 minicar and was first shown as a prototype at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show when it was called the i10 Electric. The little EV is equipped with a 16.4 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack but, other than the capacity, Hyundai hasn’t announced details about the battery yet. The pack will probably come from LG Chem, which also supplies lithium polymer energy storage for the Sonata hybrid and Chevrolet Volt

2012 Ford Focus EV to use liquid-cooled lithium-polymer battery

Ford confirms that the Focus EV will employ a liquid-cooled battery pack with automatic thermal management, just like the Chevy . Ford opted for active thermal management solution in order to help maximize the Focus EV’s battery performance and lifespan. By protecting the battery from overheating, the system can help prevent the development of cracks in the electrodes.
