Auctions: Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 races across the auction block [w/video]

Filed under: Classics , Performance , Auctions , Chevrolet If you’re as excited as we are by the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 , it might be wise to understand the historical significance of those three letters at the end of Chevy’s retrofied muscle car. Way back in 1969 – a year some consider to be the apogee of Camaro history – the automaker built just 69 ZL1s, each powered by an aluminum-block 427-cubic-inch V8 that was otherwise unavailable in the Camaro and built specifically for drag racing. The ’69 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is highly coveted by collectors, and a perfectly stunning example was auction at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale.

Video: Tim Cameron’s ShowTime is our kind of commuter car for the apocalypse

Filed under: Motorsports , Videos , Specialty , Off-Road It’s amazing what a little good old-fashioned ingenuity can create. Well, that and about 200 feet of thick steel tubing, 16-inch Fox coil-over suspenders, an LSX 454 crate engine from General Motors hooked to a Powerglide automatic transmission, and a custom-built pair of axles and a set of four 43-inch tires… Of course, none of those components would do a lick of good if it weren’t for a talented builder and driver, and Tim Cameron apparently is both. Cameron has been building this unique type of rock-climbing off-road buggy for years, and his latest creation, which is called ShowTime, is his most impressive yet.

CES: Hands on with Mercedes-Benz mBrace2

Filed under: CES , Technology , Mercedes-Benz , Luxury , Infotainment Following Dr. Z’s keynote here at CES , Mercedes-Benz showed off the latest iteration of its telematics and infotainment system, mBrace2 . The system simply expands and enhances what M-B’s system has been doing for the last few years, integrating Facebook, Google Point of Interest searches and now Google Street View into the current COMAND interface. There’s a full-scale browser controlled by the central COMAND knob, but as you can see in the video after the jump , a combination of spotty data access (the CES show floor needs its own spectrum) and some oddly chosen user interface decisions makes for a rather clunky experience
