GM Belgium factory shutting down after failure to find buyer

Filed under: Europe , Plants/Manufacturing , GM , Earnings/Financials , Opel General Motors is shutting the doors on its Antwerp, Belgium manufacturing facility after failing to find a buyer for the plant. According to Automotive News , companies from both the United States and China expressed interest in the factory, but GM says that neither could come up with a sustainable business strategy that would keep the doors open and workers employed. The plant currently provides work for around 1,300 people who were warned earlier this year that the facility could be closed by the end of 2010.

Take the Opel Astra , for example – its wagon variant accounts for around 25 percent of its overall sales. Thus, Opel hasn’t wasted any time in creating the wagon (Sports Tourer) version of the new Astra, and while it will make its public debut this October at the Paris Motor Show , General Motors is already spilling the virtual beans. Details on the little cargo carrier are slim, but snappers at CarPix tell us that the rear liftgate differs from that on the larger Insignia ST by being separated from the taillights. We are also told that the interior and engine options will be the same as on the five-door hatch , and a spicy GSi model is on the way to fill out the line. It’s too bad no one from Buick will tell us in the States, “Yes, you can have it…” You can check it out from various angles in the gallery of high-res photos below.

Rendered Speculation: Saab 9-1 gets drawn up

Filed under: Hatchback , Saab , Design/Style Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars , has made it clear that Saab , which was just recently acquired by Muller’s exclusive automaker, will introduce a new small car to go up against the Mini and the newly shown-off Audi A1 . What’s more, the new small Saab will hearken back to such classically styled Swedish iron as the classic 1949 92. It’s been rumored that the next Saab will be known as the 9-1 and will be based atop the underpinnings of the Opel Astra hatchback. Unlike past GM -based (or Subaru -based, depending) Saabs, though, Muller is reportedly telling his designers that every car wearing the Born-from-Jets badge must be instantly recognizable as a Saab

Filed under: Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Opel Click above to watch the videos after the jump The 2010 Astra is one nice-looking hatch, and the good people at Opel are going to great lengths to show the world their five-door accomplishment. The latest example of Astra pride comes in the form of a two-and-a-half minute short that plays off of the clever nature of the Oceans movies starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. If you haven’t seen any of the Oceans trilogy, each film centers around a Las Vegas casino and a gang of crafty crooks that take the owner for everything he has. All three films are edited with quick cuts and multiple clips showing at the same time.
