Detroit: We obsessively covered the 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show Press days for the 2012 Detroit Auto Show have now officially ended, and a quick survey of our yield reveals more highly anticipated production vehicles and concepts than we’ve seen since the days when Chrysler drove a stampede of cattle down Washington Blvd. The heyday of press conference theatrics may be behind us, but the vehicles themselves have begun to return. Check out the lot of them from this year’s Detroit show below. Detroit: XC60 Plug-In Hybrid shows where Volvo is headed

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrid , Technology , Crossover , Volvo , Electric , Luxury Volvo has made it a point to emphasize – surprise – the safety of its plug-in vehicles at recent auto shows . Now, at the Detroit Auto Show , the Swedish automaker has showed off the XC60 Plug-In Gasoline Hybrid Concept, a way to gauge American reaction to the idea of a plug-in CUV from Volvo. Why? Because this concept is headed to the U.S

Detroit: Toyota NS4 concept glimpses at Prius of the future

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Hybrid , Sedan , Toyota , Electric Toyota can justifiably be proud of its position not only as one of the largest automakers in the world, but also the world leader in hybrid vehicles. In fact, the Japanese automaker claims that half of all hybrids sold are Toyotas. But it didn’t get there by resting on its proverbial laurels, and it isn’t going to maintain (let alone increase) its market share by doing so, either. That’s where the concept car you see here comes in

Detroit: 2013 Ford Fusion Energi PHEV will plug-in the mid-size segment [w/video]

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrid , Sedan , Ford , Electric Along with the standard and hybrid versions of the 2013 Fusion , Ford brought something completely different – for the mid-size segment, anyway – to the Detroit Auto Show this morning with the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. It’s the cleanest of the trio and it shows that Ford is ready to introduce a big change to the competitive (and somewhat staid) mid-size class. Ford says it expects the Fusion Energi to get better MPGe ratings than both the Chevrolet Volt ( 93 MPGe , EPA rating) and the Toyota Prius Plug In ( 112 MPGe , but that’s on the European rating cycle).

Official: Volvo plugging XC60 hybrid concept in Detroit

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Hybrid , Crossover , Volvo With the new year in full swing and the Detroit Auto Show now just days away, the new debuts have been rolling in. And here we have Volvo’s centerpiece for the rapidly approaching auto expo: the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept. Based, as you might have guessed, on the production XC60 crossover, this technological concept packs a similar drivetrain to the V60 Plug-in Hybrid that just entered production. While its stouter counterpart utilizes a diesel to fill out the internal-combustion side of the hybrid equation, the XC60 concept packs a gasoline engine: those front wheels are driven by a 280-horsepower turbo four coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with a 70hp electric motor driving the rear wheels for through-the-road all-wheel drive
