Report: Rattner bio reveals Obama Administration wanted Ghosn to run GM

Filed under: Government/Legal , GM , Celebrities Steven Rattner , former automotive adviser to President Barack Obama, has just written a juicy account of last year’s automotive bailout, complete with insights on the coming and goings of CEOs, courting foreign saviors and the General Motors plan to abandon its Renaissance Center headquarters. In his book, ” Overhaul: An Insider’s Account of the Obama Administration’s Emergency Rescue of the Auto Industry, ” Rattner says that GM wanted to walk away from its expensive towers in downtown Detroit and move to Warren, MI. While the move would have likely saved the company plenty of money and lent the impression of a hands-on management approach, the Obama administration apparently refused to allow the move, saying that it would cause a double-digit drop in property values in the area. There’s also the fact that GM pays around $20 million in taxes to Detroit per year

BREAKING: Ed Whitacre named permanent CEO at GM, no Saab deal yet

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , GM , Earnings/Financials While early rumors suggested that this morning’s surprise news conference at General Motors’ Renaissance Center might be to confirm the sale of Saab to Spyker, the big news emanating from the company’s Detroit headquarters is that Ed Whitacre Jr. is scrubbing ‘interim’ from his door plaque and instead taking the title of permanent CEO. The 68 year-old Whitacre has been on the job since December 1, bringing his experience as a past CEO of AT&T to bear on the troubled automaker following the removal “stepping down” of GM’s CEO Fritz Henderson . Since he’s taken the reins, Whitacre has made bold timetable pronouncements about the company’s ability to begin repaying government loans following GM’s bankruptcy, he’s hired a new chief financial officer, consolidated the company’s North American sales and marketing channels , and fired several brand managers

REPORT: ‘Tea Party’ demonstrators to picket at Detroit Auto Show

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Government/Legal , GM On Monday, the Tea Party is coming to Detroit and crumpets are not on the docket (*rimshot*). The traveling band of disgruntled Americans is heading over to General Motors’ Renaissance Center between 9:30 AM and noon to protest against the fed’s stake in GM and Chrysler. The protest is well-timed, with 6,000 journalists and government dignitaries a few hundred yards away at the first media day of the Detroit Auto Show . The Detroit News reports that Tea Party organizers say the goal of the rally is to “make a peaceful yet clear statement against government takeover of America.” An online flier reportedly distributed by the anti-tax party states, “What Michigan needs is a responsible auto industry that can become profitable, self sustainable and efficient in ways that provide more private jobs and economic success.” While the Tea Party undoubtedly picked a great day to protest against the federal government’s 61 percent stake in GM, we’re a little confused as to why organizers chose the Ren Cen instead of Cobo Hall.

Saab owners gather in wintery Detroit, urge GM to sell brand

Filed under: Etc. , Saab Sell Saab Rally in Detroit – Click above for high-res gallery Popular wisdom would hold that about the only people willing to show up in sub-zero, slate-gray Detroit for a last-minute rally to advocate for Saab’s sale would be stereotypical brand diehards – grizzled old-timers with air-cooled two-strokes and elderly three-doors, not folks piloting General Motors -era models. Interestingly, those in attendance at today’s “Sell Saab/Save Saab” demonstration ranged broadly in age from their early twenties on through retirement age, and with the exception of a couple of 1980s 900 models, most of the Saabs were remarkably contemporary (although a good portion of those who showed up professed to owning numerous classic examples at home). To be fair, we turned up to the meeting point in the shadow of GM’s Renaissance Center headquarters this afternoon not expecting a big turnout of either cars or press, as the event was organized just a couple of days earlier by Ryan Enge of SaabHistory.com – and the weather wasn’t exactly hospitable, either

REPORT: Michigan gives GM tax break but automaker to still halve staff at RenCen

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , GM , Earnings/Financials There are roughly 4,000 GM employees working at the company’s Renaissance Center headquarters in Detroit. During the restructuring, GM has been working out how many employees to let go and where to put the remainder, and that, for the state of Michigan, meant another few thousand workers unemployed. To lessen the damage, the Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) has been in talks with GM to limit the number of retrenched employees. The General had committed to maintaining a workforce of 2,500 at the RenCen in exchange for a $50 million tax break over twenty years, but the number was recently reduced to 2,000.
