Called the ePower, the long-roof Swede is the prototype for a test fleet of 70 vehicles set to be launched next year. The company is shooting for a range of around 124 miles thanks to a 35.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, though the range figure number is somewhat fluid due to the fact that it will be largely dependent on driving habits.

All-electric Saab 9-3 test fleet reportedly to launch in early 2011

Filed under: Sedan , Saab , Electric During a media launch for the 2011 Saab 9-5 , company executives revealed plans to introduce a test fleet of electric vehicles based on the upcoming 9-3 . As Inside Line reports, Saab execs confirmed that the test fleet of EVs will roll out in early 2011 and will be deployed at various locations across the globe, including Saab’s hometown of Trollhattan, Sweden. Saab’s “100 percent electric vehicle” test fleet is a joint effort between the automaker, lithium ion battery producer Boston-Power , electric propulsion systems manufacturer Electroengine and the Swedish Energy Authority. 2012 Saab 9-3 to rival Audi A3, get Mini Countryman power?

An all-new 9-3 is going to play a big part in the revival of the Swedish brand, and Saab is reportedly hard at work on a new platform for its mainstream model. The new platform, reportedly dubbed the “Phoenix Architecture” will likely also underpin the next generation 9-5, although it may adopt some pieces from the current model such as the Hi-Per strut front suspension. Prior the GM bankruptcy, it had been decided that the next 9-3 would move from the mid-size Epsilon platform to the compact Delta platform.

Surely you remember Castriota, the man responsible for such memorable designs as James Glickenhaus’ one-off Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina and the somewhat controversial but striking Bertone Mantide . It seems that the 36-year-old Castriota’s first assignment at the reborn Swedish automaker will be redesigning the firm’s bread-and-butter 9-3 range into something a bit more unique and upscale.

Report: Saab talking to BMW about using Mini platform for new 9-2

Now that Saab is owned by Spyker Cars , CEO Victor Muller is reportedly looking for a new platform partner in Munich. According to Swedish daily Dagens Industri , Saab is negotiating with BMW about getting access to the Mini architecture for a new 9-2 model to slot in underneath the 9-3 .
