Filed under: Sedan , Etc. , Government/Legal , Safety , Acura , Luxury Honda can thank Wal-Mart for the automaker’s recent victory in a class-action lawsuit over Acura RL models equipped with the company’s Collision Mitigation Braking System. The system was designed to warn drivers of a potential crash, tighten the vehicle’s seat belts and automatically apply the brakes. However, lawyers for approximately 2,000 plaintiffs sued the Japanese automaker, arguing that the system may warn the driver too slowly, and it may not work at all – the lawsuit also complained the system may shut off altogether in foul weather

Study: Women at greater risk of injury in crashes

Filed under: Safety The American Journal of Public Health has published a new study on the role of gender in auto accidents. The results indicate that women are more likely to be injured than men when involved in comparable crashes. Researchers say that when wearing seat belts, female drivers have a higher risk of chest and spinal injuries. A combination of relatively smaller stature and differences in preferred seating positions make women more vulnerable, according to the study.

Nissan details three upcoming safety technologies

Filed under: Safety , Technology , Nissan Nissan has released details on its latest trio of safety-related technologies designed to reduce fatal and serious injuries caused by collisions. Nissan’s “Acceleration Suppression for Pedal Misapplication” technology works to mitigate collisions in confined areas by detecting whether or not the driver actually intended to step on the accelerator pedal. This system relies on four Around View Monitors that detect nearby objects and limit the response of the accelerator pedal if necessary Next in line is Nissan’s “Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera.” This technology again uses the automaker’s Around View Monitors to detect pedestrians, vehicles and road conditions to alert drivers of collision risks. This system features blind-spot warning, moving-object detection and lane-departure warning and will be installed in select models beginning in 2012.
