Report: Audi exec reconfirms plans for BMW X6 rival

Filed under: Performance , Europe , Crossover , Audi , BMW , Luxury It’s been a spell since we caught wind of the rumored BMW X6 fighter from Audi , but Automotive News Europe reports the vehicle is still in development. The publication quotes Walter de’Silva , design chief with the Volkswagen Group , as saying Audi will definitely launch a more athletic crossover positioned between the Q5 and the Q7 . Details are understandably scarce at the moment, but the vehicle will likely be designed to help Audi tap into the premium softroader segment where buyers aren’t afraid to pay top dollar for a vehicle. Unless Audi unexpectedly decides to completely scrap its alphanumeric naming scheme, odds are the newcomer will wear Q6 badges when it bows

Report: Volkswagen Group’s roadster program coming into focus

Filed under: Convertible , Audi , Porsche , Volkswagen Volkswagen BlueSport roadster concept – Click above for high-res image gallery These days, an auto giant like the Volkswagen Group can hardly justify a new platform unless it can amortize the cost across numerous variants. Fortunately, VW has enough brands in its portfolio to do exactly that. Just as the same platform underpins the Volkswagen Polo , Audi A1 , Skoda Fabia and Seat Ibiza (none of which, of course, are available in North America), and another underpins the Volkswagen Touareg , Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne , so will the company’s next mid-engine roadster platform be distributed into numerous models across the corporate tree. The project has been several years in the making, but as development speeds towards production, Autocar has some details on what to expect

2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Executive

2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Executive The Touareg feels like a collection of everything this company does well. I drove some 565 miles over an early-April weekend, about 200 miles of which was on two-lane, northern Michigan roads; the rest was mostly freeway. My average fuel economy was 26 mpg, as indicated by the trip computer, so if I had been driving solely on the freeway and kept my speed in check, I suspect I could have achieved the 28-mpg EPA highway figure. I was going 78-80 mph on the freeway and I’ve been told by automotive engineers that SUVs and crossovers suffer a dramatic loss in fuel efficiency above 70 mph.

Report: Volkswagen to announce WRC entry in May

Rumors surrounding a prospective motorsports expansion in the Volkswagen Group have been swirling around for years now. One of the largest automakers in the world, VW’s factory-supported racing activities are largely limited to Audi and its considerable Le Mans program and Volkswagen’s own Dakar efforts, with a handful of lower-level initiatives and non-works entries in other series. We’re still expecting a big shake-up, but the first step, according to reports, will see the Volkswagen brand launch a challenge for the World Rally Championship . The initiative was set to launch last month at the WRC Portugal Rally, but Germans being Germans, the launch was reportedly delayed because the papers had yet to be signed by the right people.
