Frank Weber, the chief engineer behind the Chevrolet Volt, is to leave General Motors to take a senior position with Opel.
German-born Weber will leave the firm on 1 December and he has been the global vehicle line executive and chief vehicle engineer for GM’s electric vehicle development program since March 2007.
He had previously held a similar position at Opel, where he developed saloons including the Vauxhall Insignia.
“There is a huge difference in the Volt program from when I came here,” said Weber. “The entire organisation has inhaled what we do here.”
Weber has not disclosed his new role at Opel as the company’s future has still to be decided.
GM has built its future around the Chevrolet Volt as it emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year. A European version, the Opel/Vauxhall Ampera, is set to go on-sale within the next three years.
